Mile Wide. Inch Deep
Jim Knight talks a great deal about the need for professional reflection. In my definition, the act of reflecting necessitates stillness and thought. Given our incredibly busy schedules, where would you suggest we build in self-reflection? As "partners" in this adventure called "coaching", what ideas do you have about maintaining balance, getting fewer things done well, and meeting the needs of ourselves and our colleagues?

I think that time for reflection should be built in, but right now I have absolutely no idea where I would fit it. I had 6 different meetings today and felt lucky that I could take a bathroom break.
One big non-instructional coach hat that I'm wearing right now is the RtI coordinator hat. The whole EBIS process at our school is still in its transition stage between theoretical and practical, and everyone is looking to me to "solve" all the issues, which takes a tremendous amount of time and brain energy. I'm thinking that in the future, as the EBIS process is clarified and codified that I will be able to make this into a much smaller hat. Maybe I'll have time then...

I agree that this is an issue. I also think that it is going to look a little different for each of at our different schools. The only way I know how to maintain balance and get things done well is to try to do ONE THING at a time and get it done and done well. MUCH EASIER SAID THAN DONE!!!I have toying with the idea of sending out a "survey" to my staff at Fairview and asking them to rate a few tasks by importance to them. I would love your feedback, coaches, if you think this is a good idea!! Some of the tasks I am thining of putting on the survey are:
(1)Your IC helping with DIBELS progress monitoring.
(2)Your IC helping with DIBELS benchmark testing.
(3)Your IC setting up times for collaboration or "walk throughs" to provide feedback & suggestions on specifics we have set up prior. (4)Your IC arranging time to cover your class while you observe a colleague.
Anything else?

Having time for reflection would be great, but I do think that it needs to be built in. We are doing so many things at our buildings and wearing so many hats, that I just don't know where anything else can be fit it. I have two problems. 1) I feel sometimes that I have so many things going on that nothing gets done well or I am franticly trying to accomplish things by due dates or 2) I get in a situation where I feel that there isn't really a lot for us to do. The second situation rarely happens, but when it does on a rare afternoon I feel that I am getting nothing done because I'm used to accomplishing so much more.
Self Reflection...hmmmm...Where could we put it in?
I think this blog is a form of reflection, so that is good. I love the comments and thoughts of others. Yet, I am able to do it on my own time.
Our Monday meetings are also forms of reflection.
